Furthermore, it explains her struggles against the authorities. While her activism has exposed the authorities and school officials, it has had a bad effect on her daughter because no school is willing to enroll her. She created a community group that educated the sex workers about health issues and safety. Many people were scared of prostitutes and not even sitting on chairs that they sat on because they were mistakenly believing that they would capture sexual diseases. Her activism went so far that she even offered free sexual services herself to help people avoid strict laws and help people’s desires. On January 11 2012, Ye wanted to help the peasant workers for free, so they would not get in trouble with the authorities. She was wary of sexual workplaces being raided by the police because she witnessed a brothel being raided in Guangxi province. Nanfu Wang helped Haiyan in her protest against the principal that allegedly committed sexual abuse against six school girls and Wang was not safe anymore from the authorities. Also, Nanfu ardently helped Ye by capturing footage for the documentary Hooligan Sparrow. The documentary gained multiple accolades including a nomination for Sundance 2016’s Grand Jury Prize which recognizes the best documentary work and a spot for the 2016 Oscar for Feature Length Documentary which celebrates non-fiction films that last longer 60 minutes. The film resulted in the lawyer and other people being arrested and Haiyan’s passport has been confiscated since November 2014. She is an internet celebrity who has put herself through sex work for the sole purpose of exposing how bad the workers' conditions are. Haiyan has been good at using the media, especially social media, to gain media attention and support.

Filming was its own feat itself which is proven in the documentary, as you visibly see Nanfus’ struggles. After Nanfu introduces herself to the camera, we get to the main person of focus, Ye Haiyan. Born in 1975 she first made her way onto the activist scene in 2005. This is the start of her activism for sex workers. She worked as a free sex agent to migrant workers and publicly posted blogs about the experience.

    • After a protesting event in Wanning, Hainan province, Ye who protested alongside several other protesters was detained. They protested as a school principal had been accused of sleeping with students of his school. In the article there is a picture of Ye holding up a sign that has the word ‘Principle take a room with me instead Leave the pupils alone.’ This message from Ye alone led hundreds of others to do the same. The Guardian is a well known and respected newspaper. Their news and articles are a good and credible source. I plan to use this article to add events into Ye’s timeline of activism.

This thrilling documentary that shows a group of friends and activists covering China, and that they will go to any length to expose truth and bring justice to those involved.
