The National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA), based in Farmington Hills, MI, represents nearly 1,600 companies that manufacture, distribute, install, sell and repair commercial trucks, truck bodies, truck equipment, trailers and accessories. Many vocational fleets are also members of the Association. The NTEA is well known for producing the annual Work Truck Show.

History

edit

The NTEA was established in 1964 under the name of The Truck Equipment and Body Distributors Association (D/A). Initially, the D/A served as a sales and marketing organization for a small group of truck equipment distributors. The D/A membership quickly expanded and in 1967 a full-time executive director was hired to oversee Association operations. As membership continually increased over the next 10 years, it became necessary to relocate its headquarters to a permanent and larger office building. In 1978, the D/A moved operations to a building in Farmington Hills, MI, which is in the heart of the automotive industry. As membership continued to grow, the D/A added support staff, including an engineer. It was in 1979 that the D/A made the official decision to change its name to The National Truck Equipment Association to better reflect its role in the commercial truck body and equipment industry.

NTEA Membership Composition

edit

NTEA membership is divided into three main categories:

  • Distributor (50% of membership) - Companies engaged principally in the business of assembling commercial work trucks from truck bodies, truck equipment, trailers or component parts of such bodies, equipment or trailers from manufacturers for resale to users and dealers.
  • Manufacturer (33% of membership) - Companies engaged principally in the manufacture of truck bodies, truck equipment, trailers, or component parts of such bodies, equipment or trailers.
  • Associate (17% of membership) - Companies that are not distributors or manufacturers, but are affiliated with the truck equipment industry through an ongoing business relationship with Distributor and/or Manufacturer members.
