Rawdon House

Rawdon House, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, was built in 1622 by Marmaduke Rawdon. Around 1631, the town received its first public water supply courtesy of Sir Marmaduke Rawdon. During the construction of Rawdon House, Sir Marmaduke Rawdon supplied the house with water via a 'conduit' or lead pipe from the area of high ground known as High Leigh, and earlier as Godes Well Acre, to the south of Box Wood. The conduit provided a plentiful supply of water for the house and so a new pipe was laid to the southern end of the High Street, where the present Conduit Lane begins its journey downhill to the former Lynch Mill. A statue of a Samaritan Woman was positioned at this junction in 1622 to provide the people of Hoddesdon with clear, fresh drinking water until 1826 when it was replaced by an iron pump.
