The Dunites were a group of mystics, nudists, artists, writers, and hermits who inhabited the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes from the 1930s to the 1960s. They believed that the Dunes were a center of creative energy. Gavin Arthur, grandson of the 21st President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur, published a magazine about the dunes and the Dunites called "The Dune Forum." The story of the Dunites was fictionalized by Luther Whiteman in his novel, The Face of the Clam (1947).
