Anastasia Divinskaya became the representative of UN Women Brazil in 2019 when she took over the role from Dr Nadine Gasman.[1] She has worked in Moldova, Timor-Leste and her home country of Kyrgyzstan.

Life

Divinskaya studied in Kyrgyzstan and she was awarded a master's degree in Arts, Literature and Germanic Languages ​​and a postgraduate degree in Economic Theory from Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University.[2] She worked at the UN office in Kyrgyzstan. Before joining UN Women, she was working for other United Nations projects in Kyrgyzstan. In 2007 she was made responsible for Kyrgyzstan's Unifem / UN Women office.[3] In 2010 she was working in Moldova for UN Women looking at issues effected by gender and the rights of political minorities.[3] She has also served as a representative of UN Women in Ukraine where she established their first office until in 2013 she became UN Women Deputy Representative in Timor-Leste.[3] Divinskaya was appointed to the position of representative of the UN Women Brazil office on 16 December 2019, following her 19 years working for the United Nations.[2]

She wrote for El Pais in 2021 about the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which falls on 25 November.[4] Her article mentioned the "16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women" in Brazil. Buildings would be lit up in orange. 17 million women in 2020 suffered violence but nearly half of them did not bother to report it. Every six hours Divinskaya reported a woman is killed with the only reason that she is a woman. Within that group based on gender there are a large proportion are black victims.[4]


In 2023 she was invited to a special session of the senate to celebrate the 17th anniversary of Lei Maria da Penha the law creating special punishments for domestic abuse against women.

Private life

Anastasia is married and she has a daughter. Her husband has held various positions from a UN Coordinating Officer in Kyrgyzstan to a political analyst in Iraq.[2]
