Okanugu Village



Okanugu a small village situated some 100km south east of the town of Okakarara in the Otjozondjupa region in Namibia on the C22 road to Okondjatu. A small village of about 40 inhabitant’s manly from the ovaherero community, the people of this village sustain there live on farming with crop and livestock wish they consume as food and selling to the market in Okakarara for money to get there basic needs . The vegetation of this village is manly grassland with a lot of the camelthorn trees.

The ancestral cult still plays an important role in the lives of many Herero people. In the evenings, they often sit in front of the 'Okuruo', the holy fire, which may never be allowed to burn out. The chief establishes contact with the ancestors and in a loud self-talk, asks for advice and help or confesses mistakes and sins.
