User:VanishedUser sdu8asdasd/WP:Football guidelines

Currently, I have a strong view that the Wikiproject needs a big overhaul in terms of guidelines. Here, I attempt to address this, and tout my own ideas of what they should be.

Notability

edit

Players

edit

A player is presumed notable if they meet at least one of these points:

  • They pass WP:GNG. This is done with significant coverage in two or more national-level WP:Reliable Sources, which are non-trivial and non-routine, whilst being independent of the subject and their club. Examples of trivial or routine coverage include, but are not restricted to: match reports, reports on completed transfers, reports on contract extensions and injury reports.
  • The player has made 5 or more appearances in a top division within a national league structure (e.g. English Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A).
  • The player has made 5 or more appearances in the group stages, or the knockout stages, of a major continental club competition (e.g. Europa League, Champions League, Asian Champions League)
  • The player has made 10 or more appearances in a league listed in the WP:FPL list.
  • The player has made 25 or more appearances in a national-level league, but one that is neither a top division, or listed in the above FPL list.
  • The player has won a significant award from a national football governing body, with a primary source to prove that. (Currently, I don't really know how to quantify this one; it's just an idea)
  • The player has made 1 or more appearances for a national team in a major international competition (e.g. World Cup, African Cup of Nations)
  • The player has made 3 or more appearances for a national team in any fixture
  • The player has made 5 or more appearances for a Under-21 national team in a major Under-21 tournament (e.g. Under-21 World Cup)
  • The player has made 300 or more appearances for a single club, not covered by the above guidelines, but where the club has competed in one tier below the lowest national level for at least 2 seasons.

Coaching staff

edit

A coach is presumed notable if they meet at least one of the points:

  • They pass WP:GNG. This is done with significant coverage in two or more national-level WP:Reliable Sources, which are non-trivial and non-routine, whilst being independent of the subject and their club. Examples of trivial or routine coverage include, but are not restricted to: post-game interviews (from the day the game took place) and reports on contract extensions.
  • They meet one or more of the criteria listed above for a player.
  • Have been appointed manager, or assistant manager, of any club playing in the top league of a country
  • Have been a manager, or assistant manager, of one or more clubs in a WP:FPL, but not in a top league of a country, for at least 6 months in total
  • Have been a manager, or assistant manager, of one or more clubs that are neither in the FPL list, or a top level league, but are playing in a national level league, for at least 2 years in total
  • Have coached a club, or clubs, playing in the top league of a country, for at least 2 years in total
  • Have coached a club, or clubs, playing in a FPL, but not in the top league of a country, for at least 5 years in total
  • Have won a significant award from a national football governing body, with a primary source to prove that. (Currently, I don't really know how to quantify this one; it's just an idea)
  • Have been appointed manager, or assistant manager, of a full international team
  • Have been a manager, or assistant manager, of a Under 21s international team for at least 6 months in total
  • Have been a manager of a single club for over 10 years, where the club is not covered by the above guidelines, but where the club has competed in one tier below the lowest national level for at least 2 seasons.

Procedure for dealing with transfers

edit

At present, there are no fixed procedures for dealing with transfers, or with people leaving clubs. This is a way of fixing that. NB: If they are a key player to the squad, their transfer was majorly controversial, or involved a big fee, or the person departing is a manager, then it will usually be appropriate to include a bit of prose in the section about the club's history.

A person has transferred to another club

edit

Once the transfer is confirmed in a reliable source:

  • Post a note in the person's current club's article to state that he will be leaving on -insert date here-, using a $ sign, and a footnote at the bottom of the section
  • Post a note in the person's future club's article to state that he will be joining on -insert date here-, using a dagger, and a footnote at the bottom of the section
  • Edit the lead of the person's article to say he will be transferring on -insert date here-. Do not change their current club in the infobox until that date is reached, and do not insert anything into the infobox about the new club. However, you need to change the dates of the person's spell at their current club to show that they are leaving.
  • Do not remove the person from their current team's squad template, add them to their new team's squad template, or change the template until the date of transfer has passed.
  • Add a section in the main body of the article for the new club, informing the reader of who they are transferring to, and, where appropriate, what the transfer fee was, and what the length of the contract was, plus any reaction by the manager of their current club, or their new club. Ensure you use a reliable source when doing so.

A person has been released by a club at the end of their contract

edit

Once this is confirmed in a reliable source:

  • Post a note in the person's current club's article to state that he will be leaving on -insert date here-, using a * sign, and a footnote at the bottom of the section
  • Edit the lead of the person's article to say that they will be leaving on -insert date here-. Do not change their current club in the infobox until that date is reached; however, you need to change the dates of the person's spell at their current club to show that they are leaving.
  • Do not remove the person from their current team's squad template, add them to their new team's squad template, or change the template present in the article, until the date of transfer has passed.
  • Update the relevant section in the main body of the article to state that they will be leaving the club on -insert date here-, with the reason given for their departure, if possible.

A person has been released from their club with immediate effect

edit

Once this is confirmed in a reliable source:

  • Remove the person from their current club's article's relevant job list, referencing the reliable source in your edit summary.
  • Edit the lead of the person's article to state that they are currently unattached, having been released by -insert club here-
  • Change the current club in the infobox to say "Unattached", remove the current squad number, and update the relevant part of the person's career history with the year of departure.
  • Update the relevant section in the main body of the article to state that they have left the club on -insert date here-, with the reason given for their departure, if possible.
  • Remove the current club's squad template from the article, and remove the person from the aforementioned template.
