While in college Vardi worked part-time in retail and became interested in graphic design.[2] She moved to the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York and started working as a freelance designer.[2]

Vardi founded jewelry brand Catbird in 2004.[3] She opened it as a general lifestyle store in a 200-square-foot space and eventually honed in on jewelry, at first selling the work of local designers and then moving into designing original pieces.[2][1] Vardi's original designs are based on her personal style; she layers small, delicate pieces and seldom takes them off.[1]
