1847 - Southampton and Dorchester Railway edit
In 1847 The Southampton and Dorchester Railway opened through east Dorset. The line initially terminated at Dorchester. The line known as Castleman's Corkscrew passed through the villages of Ringwood and Broadstone. There was a branch line to the port of Poole, although this was to the western side of Holes Bay opposite the town, thus a ferry was required to complete a journey to Poole. There was no railway connection to Bournemouth as at the time it was a minor village on the coast - passengers for Bournemouth had to alight at Wimborne and travel via road to Bournemouth. The line was entirely single track at this point.
