Dry ice has been used for many years to carbonate beverages. Specifically, Mormons in Salt Lake City buy hundreds of pounds of dry ice each year to make home made root beer. The dry ice is added to the mixture and as it sublimates, carbonates the beverage. it is actually very good. There are small beverage companies throughout the United States that still use some dry ice pellets in their process (rather than liquid carbon dioxide). On a mass production line like soda or beer liquid carbon dioxide works better and is more economical. However, for a fun party treat, try making your own root beer or carbonated beverage.
