Most employees in Namibia went on strike for salary increment this year (2012)
editThis is mostly caused by the employers who fail to increase the employees salaries, when most basic commodity prices hike, and their salaries has not been increased over years This makes a living difficult for employees because they won't afford a living without their salaries being increased. Most of the times when employees try to negotiate with their employers for salary increase, they always get "there is no money" answers. This year, 2012 most workers went on strike after their demands were not met. The Namibia Airports Company(NAC) retrenched all its workers at the end of March and rehired some of them with worse employment conditions than they previously had, and because of these, A total of 70 workers agreed to strike. Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) employees wanted a 13 per cent salary increase and their housing subsidies increased to 60 percent. They also claimed that their overtime claims were slashed in half – which they referred to as harassment. Not even a month past by, Polytechnic of Namibia Staff belonging to the bargaining unit – grades 7 to 16 – went on strike after they did not receive an annual salary increase over 4 years and negotiations with the Namibia Public Workers’ Union fell flat. Then followed by Agricultural bank of Namibia (Agribank)The strike came after employees refused to accept a 6 per cent increase approved by the board of directors. TransNamib workers also went on strike. This is just to mention but a few. A total of 784 labour cases were reported to the office of the Labour Commissioner, Bro-Matthew Shinguadja, during the last quarter – between June 1 and August 31. A total of 602 cases were referred for conciliation and arbitration, while 182 were found to be defective. This resulted in a number of strikes and worker disputes being declared.
