Welcome to the tutorial on subpages! They are simple to use and create.

What are subpages for? edit

Subpages can be created in all namespaces except for the main (article) space. They have several uses:

  • Subpages of talk pages, with the naming format "Talk:Name of article/Temp", can be used to compose article drafts. This is particularly used to rewrite articles that have been labelled as potential copyright violations.
  • Rather than putting everything on their user page, users can create subpages of their user pages. This tutorial is on a subpage of a user subpage!
  • Many Wikipedia processes use subpages, such as motto of the day and articles for deletion.
  • Talk, user talk, image talk, etc. pages, as well as certain Wikipedia pages such as the village pump pages, can be archived.

How do I create a subpage? edit

Creating a subpage is mostly the same as creating any other page. Go to a nonexistent page named using the name of its parent with a slash and more text. For example, if Gray Porpoise wants to make a user subpage about where he lives, he could create a page called User:Gray Porpoise/Where I live. Subpages can have subpages as well, e.g. User:Gray Porpoise/Where I live/My office.

How do I navigate subpages? edit

At the top of subpages, there are links to higher-level pages. For example, in small lettering at the top of this tutorial, there are links to User:Gray Porpoise/Tutorials and User:Gray Porpoise.

What are the rules for subpages? edit

There are certain ways in which subpages can be used that are disallowed.

  • You may put information about yourself on your user subpages, but keep this limited.
  • Absolutely no POV forks of articles are permitted.
  • Use subpages for drafts and other temporary or non-encyclopedic content. Use the article space only for content meant to stay part of the encyclopedia.
