The Jabatan Agama Islam (JAIS) (Malay; English: Islamic Department) is the governing department in Malaysia in charge of Islamic affairs.

History

The origins of the JAIS traces back to pre-independence Malaya, during the occupation of the region by the Empire of Japan during World War II and the spread of communism that accumulated to the Malayan Emergency. Then Sultan of Selangor Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah believed the beliefs and values of his Malay subjects were in risk as a result, and called for the formation of a governing body in charge of Islamic affairs.

On October 1, 1945, two months after the surrender of Japan and a month after a return to British rule, the Department of Islamic Affairs (Jabatan Hal Ehwal Islam) was formed. Raja Haji Nong bin Raja Hussin was appointed the first secretary of the department, its operations were temporarily based in the Sultan of Selangor's office close to the Istana Kota Klang, and funding was allocated by the Sultan. The Department of Islamic Affairs aided the government in countering communist influence, while enforcing the morals and customs of Malays in accordance to Islamic teachings.

Setelah dirujuk susunan pentadbiran Jabatan Agama Islam Johor berasaskan satu lawatan ke Jabatan Agama Islam Johor pada 1946, Undang-undang Tubuh Negeri Selangor telah digubal pada tahun 1947 meliputi hal penubuhan Jabatan Hal-Ehwal Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu. Rentetan daripada perkembangan ini, tertubuhlah secara rasminya Jabatan Hal-Ehwal Agama Islam pada bulan Januari 1948. Bangunan lama Kelab Diraja Selangor dipilih sebagai pejabat pentadbirannya.
