History

The Western Australian Insurance Company (WAICO)

1912-1920

  • The Western Australian Insurance Company was founded by Samuel William Copley in 1912. Unable to find a company that would insure cattle during transit, he founded WAICO.[3]. WAICO expanded into eastern Australia and started operating in London when Copley returned in 1914. [4][5][6]
  • During the First World War the company grew steadily, offering various types of insurance including War Risks, Marine, General and Life. [4][5][7][8]

1930-1966

  • By the 1930s, WAICO’s presence in the insurance industry had continued to grow. The 1950s saw a boom in the popularity of televisions and, together with Reg T. Sharpe (director of a motor insurance company) and Harold Curtis (Secretary of the Radio and Television Retailers Association), Copley launched television breakdown cover under the brand: ‘Telesurance’. In 1966, Telesurance was renamed and became Domestic & General Insurance Co. Ltd.[4][5]

1978-1990s

  • The Copley family acquired complete control of Domestic & General Insurance Co. Ltd. in 1978 and merged it with WAICO in the 1980s. By 1988, Domestic & General was listed on the London Stock Exchange and in 1989, it had reached 1 million customers.[5]
  • Offices in Spain and Germany were established in the 1990s and in 1996 the first contact centre was opened in Nottingham.[5]

2000s – present

  • In the 2000s, Domestic & General acquired a contact centre company in Brighton called Inkfish, which gave them the ability to outbound and make telesales for the first time. [5][9]
  • In 2013, Domestic & General was acquired by the CVC Group, which manages over US$52 billion of assets. [5][10][11]
  • Today, Domestic & General operates in 10 countries and employs just under 3,000 people around the world. They have over 16 million customers and protect 24 million appliances and electronics worldwide. [5][12][13][14]
  • As of September 2018 CVC Capital Partners has hired Rothschild to advise it on an initial public offering (IPO) expected to value Domestic & General at about £1.5bn. Barclays, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse have been chosen to lead the public offering.[6][15]
