Shaking Up Shakespeare is a drama company that establised in January 1989. Anthony Glenn is the writer and peformer of the company while Andrea Hall is the co-writer and adminstrator.
The aim of Shaking Up Shakespeare is to make Shakespeare plays more approachable and fun, especially for the younger generation, but at the same time keeping the essence and energy of the original plays. The performances were specially devised and developed to be one-man shows presented in a very lucid and unembellished style ie; no scenery and simple props and costumes.
The idea was not to replace more traditional Shakespeare productions but to be more of a bridge between the student, afraid or bored and a more sophisticated appreciation.
So from the first performance of "Macbeth" in 1989, Anthony and Andrea have devised and developed many different shows based on the plays of Shakespeare. These are suitable for any age and all plays are constantly in repetoire.
Each performance, lasts about an hour and is high energy with audience participation which is guaranteed to take the plays off the page and onto the stage in a very unique way.
Ironically for what was initially an educationally based experiment, the performances now stand in their own right as entertainment. They are often booked for special occasions and evening performances in various venues.
Shaking Up Shakespeare is known to have peformed at the Edinburgh Festival and received impressive feedback. The Scotsman newspaper said of Shaking Up Shakespeare, "Anthony Glenn deserves serious respect. The one-man show has quality." Anthony Glenn is also mentioned in many school's "Gateway to Excellence"[1]</ref> program as an "excellent way to educate young minds about Shakespeare." In 2007 Branfield School said, "Anthony Glenn is a welcomed visitor to Barnfield School. Every year he comes to not only work with the Year 6 children, to further thier knowledge of Shakespeare, but also does a performance for the juniors. He is a one man show and therefore uses the children to help him. This year, Anthony performed 'Macbeth' which was thoroughly enjoyed by both children and staff."[2]
A Play In A Week
editAnthony Glenn can also work with a group of 30-60 school students from reception to year 11 to to peform a Shakespeare play at the end of the week, using a mix of Shakespeare's playright and the students' creative ideas. This has received much positive feedback from teachers, audiences and students who peformed in the play and worked with him.
Anthony Glenn works with the students over the week with a one man show and drama workshops to involve all students and also give some students peforming confidence.
Workshops
editAnthony Glenn is sometimes booked by schools to do a one man show followed by a drama workshop for students to learn, peform and have fun.
Christmas
editAs well as Shakespeare plays, Anthony Glenn does peform other one-man shows like "A Christmas Carol" and "The Little Fir Tree" for younger audiences especially.
Shaking Up Shakespeare is now a well established drama company, especially around Greater London for its education, entertainment, drama and adaptability for all audiences and groups.
