  • Van Dyke Jones (Com ’50 L/M) of Harrisburg, Pa., died Nov. 23, 2011. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. At the University, he participated in varsity football, where he achieved All-State and All-America honors. He was a member of the Raven Scholastic Society, Omicron Delta Kappa, St. Anthony Hall, the IMP Society and the Seven Society. He worked for Hershey Creamery Co. for 27 years, retiring as the vice president of sales in 1978.   • Paul B. Barringer II (1952) of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, died May 30, 2016. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. At the University, he was a member of the Honor Committee, T.I.L.K.A., IMP Society, P.K. Society, Skull and Keys, Naval ROTC, V Club and Zeta Psi fraternity. He was also a member of the football, wrestling, and track and field teams. In 1955, he joined his father’s company, Coastal Lumber Co., in Weldon, North Carolina. He purchased the company from his father in 1959, and the firm grew significantly under his leadership. He loved to play tennis, bird hunt and repeat stories that never got old.   • "Frederic S. Bocock (Col 1954 L/M) of Richmond, Va., died Nov. 24, 2008. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the University’s Seven Society. His career was with the brokerage and investment banking firm of Scott and Stringfellow, where he was a partner and served as vice president from 1971 to 2001. He was president of the Richmond Memorial Hospital board and the men’s advisory board of the Virginia Home, a nonprofit facility serving adults with disabilities. Survivors include sons John Holmes Bocock (GSBA ’95) and Alexander Hamilton Bocock (GSBA ’98), and a granddaughter, Nora Brookfield Bocock (Educ ’95, ’08)."   • William C. Sinclair (Engr ’54 L/M) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died Feb. 1, 2019. He served in the U.S. Army. At UVA, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, the IMP Society, T.I.L.K.A. and the Seven Society, he lettered in football, boxing and lacrosse. He was second team All-American for lacrosse and played on the 1952 national championship team. After graduation, Mr. Sinclair worked for the Virginia Department of Highways, McLean Contracting Co. and Waterfront Marine. He was known at McLean as the person who could solve almost any construction issue and the one to send to any emergency situation. He mentored many in the marine construction industry. In 1977, he designed and helped build his dream home in Sandbridge, Virginia, where he lived until October 2018. Mr. Sinclair was known for his practical jokes, acrobatic dives, tricks and drawings.   • Gordon Woody Jr. (Col ‘54 L/M) of Danville, Va., died Jan. 6, 2010. He served in the U.S. Navy. At the University, he was a member of the Seven Society and the staff of Corks & Curls.   • E. Massie "Skeeter" Valentine (Col '56) of Richmond, Virginia, died August 3, 2017. At the University, he was a member of Delta Psi fraternity (St. Anthony Hall), the IMP Society, the Raven Society and Eli Banana. He also played on the tennis team.
  • Martin A. Purcell (Col '57, Law '60) of Greenwich, CT, died February 12, 2015. At the University he was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, President of the IMP Society and President of St. Elmo Hall, and also a member of Eli Banana, the Raven Society and ODK. "Martin A.   • Marion Jack Rinehart (Col '57, Arch '65 CM) of Charlottesville, died March 7, 2023. After earning his bachelor’s from the McIntire School of Commerce, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1957 and resigned in 1965 as a captain. He returned to Grounds to earn a bachelor’s in architecture. At UVA he was a member of the golf team, Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, the T.I.L.K.A. Society and the IMP Society. He started his own architectural practice in 1969 and became known for designing custom homes and renovating golf club houses. One of his proudest accomplishments included creating the vision for the restoration and design of several buildings at Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore County. He enjoyed cheering on the ’Hoos at football, basketball, lacrosse, track and baseball games, wearing his latest orange-and-blue polo shirts and bow ties. Survivors include three children; three siblings, including Bruce H. Rinehart (Com ’63) and the Rev. Caroline R. Stewart (Educ ’71); and five grandchildren."In Memoriam". UVA Magazine. Fall 2023.   • John Latane Lewis III (Col '59, Law '62): "of Powhatan, Va., died May 8, 2012. At the University, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, the Seven Society, Eli Banana, the IMP Society, the 13 Society, the 3-3-3 Committee and the Corks & Curls staff. Mr. Lewis twice served as president of the Student Council, once as a college student and again as a law student. He practiced law in Powhatan County and later served as commonwealth’s attorney for 23 years. A member of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Bar Association, he also served on the boards of the Elizabeth Randolph Lewis Powhatan YMCA, Southside Electric Cooperative and Huguenot Academy."
