C. Behan McCullagh, sometimes C.B.McCullagh, researched into the analysis of historical knowledge and understanding. He concentrated on the logic of history, the underlying rationale for historical decisions and events. Retired from his academic career, he teaches at La Trobe University in the Department of Philosophy..

McCullagh read for his BA at Sydney University, gaining it in 1958, and received his MA and PhD from Clare College Cambridge in 1965.[1]

His career was as a lecturer, then associate professor and reader in philosophy in the Department of History, University of Melbourne, retiring to become an Honorary Associate in philosophy at La Trobe University.[1]

Research edit

McCullagh's main research theme included the truth, logic, bias, and philosophy of the subject of history.[2] He has postulated seven conditions for a successful argument to the best explanation.[3] These are covered in detail in Historical method § Synthesis: historical reasoning
