'Home Guards' is a voluntary force, first raised in India in December 1946, to assist the police in controlling civil disturbance and communal riots. The role of Home Guards is to serve as an auxiliary force to the Police is maintenance of internal security situations, help the community in any kind of emergency such as an air-raid, fire, cyclone, earthquake, epidemic etc., help in maintenance of essential services, promote communal harmony and assist the administration in protecting weaker sections, participate in socio-economic and welfare activities and perform Civil Defence duties.

Thiruvallur district has its own Home Guards wing headed by the Superintendent of Police. Thiruvallur Home Guards wing consists of an Area Commander, a Deputy Area Commander, Company commanders, Platoon commanders, Section leaders and the guards.

In the period of Mr.Cephas Kalyan IPS as the Superintendent of Police, he promoted Mr. Vijayanarayanan from Deputy Area Commander to the Area Commander of Home Guards in Thiruvallur district. Mr. Vijayanarayanan took charge as the Area Commander of Home Guards in Thiruvallur district from November, 2022. Then, Ms. Sathiya Narayani. R, who has an undergraduate degree in the field of Criminology and Police Administration has been appointed as the Deputy Area Commander of Home Guards in Thiruvallur district. Ms. Sathiya Narayani. R took charge as the Deputy Area Commander of Home Guards in Thiruvallur district from December, 2022. She had studied the Special laws, Police Administration and Management, Community Policing, Prevention of Crime and Crowd control and riot management in depth as a part of her UG degree which would also support her for effectively performing the duties as the Deputy Area Commander of Home Guards in Thiruvallur district.

With the experience of the Area Commander and the fresh energy and spirit of the Deputy Area Commander, the team is expected to excel in their duties and responsibilities. We hope for the best and expecting the department to get a future with flying colours.
