The Magenta Penguin
editIn March 2008, seven year old Tara Hall wrote an essay and her Grade 2 class teacher gave each of her classmates at St Cyprian's Preparatory School a page to illustrate. This beautifully illustrated essay was published by Osborne Porter Osborne Porter Publisherslater that year in a book called The Magenta Penguin.
Initially 1000 books were printed and 1000 limited edition plush magenta penguins were made. 100% of net proceeds from the sale of these books & plush toys sold have been shared among the following beneficiary Organisations:
- SANCCOB - Adopt a Penguin (they are aiming to adopt 27 penguins - one for each class member) - SANCCOB Website
- TEARS - animal sanctuary for cats and dogs - The EMMA Animal Rescue Service - TEARS
- St Cyprian’s School “…girl child in Afrika” - Bursary program for underprivileged girls - St Cyprians School
Basic story line… This is a story about a penguin that is different, in fact a magenta penguin called Siffira10 and covers one year in her life. Siffira10 is concerned that she won’t find her own mate as all the other penguins are black and she is the only magenta African Penguin at Boulder’s Beach. Fortunately she meets a wonderful life partner, Percy, another black African Penguin. They have 2 offspring, Wiffels and Wiskey. This family survives many dangers, among them winter storms, marauding gulls and an oil spill! The lesson in this story is one of hope, in other words, never give up!
