The History of this concept can come back to the invention of the computer by Charles Babbage in the 1830's, however more people where not that interested in computers until they became more mainstream and used on a daily bases.

Many computerohiles attend events such as DEFCON (which is held every year in Las Vegas) where many poeple are intrested computers and particularly hacking which is one of the biggest of it's kind in the world.
