The Costan Civil War, also known as the Costan Rebellion, was a major conflict that started with the Alerian Grand Systematic's invasion of Jyrovic on March 12, 2866, and ended with the Trycerid Laskar's declaration of war on the Orion states in 2870. It was the first major war fought between rival powers within the Costan Empire, and the first war fought by the Human-led UNISIUM (United Nations and Independent Systems Unified Interstellar Military). Overall, the war lasted four years officially, although some do not consider the war to have officially ended until the final foundation of the Orion Republic as the official government in the Orion sector on December 5th, 2875. It resulted in an unprecidented Alerian defeat - the Costan Empire was disbanded, all empires originally part of the Costan Empire eventually joined the Orion Republic, and all Kavro'Sal leaders of the Grand Systematic were exiled from the galaxy. In the end, the war was relatively minor on the galactic scale in terms of relative nation size and casualties, but most scholars consider the Costan Civil War to be a defining moment in galactic history.

Although the war officially started with the invasion of Jyrovic, there had been several armed conflicts between Alerian carrier groups and separatist weapon suppliers beforehand, as early as a year before the actual start of the war. Notably, these conflicts also involved an Alerian attack on a human cargo ship, the ISV Burgundy, which marked the first point of contact between galactic civilization and the Human race. During this year, tensions rapidly built between the Costan nations, and two groups quickly emerged - the Costan Imperialists, a loyalist faction led by the Alerian and Al'ker Grand Systematics, and the Orion Separatists, an independance movement fronted by the Macian Republic and Redstar Alliance. Support for the rebellion grew over time, with Vysal Tyro Tyranemis, Tsia Council-master Kyas Tryops, and the Donovian Senate eventually promising their support. Aurelius Tristane, the prime minister of the UNISIUM at the time, was unwilling to commit to the cause, but did quietly favor the Macian-led alliance. At the same time, the Alerian Grand Systematic was amassing support among the neutral empires - the Lyranthian Imperial Dominion and the Aerellian Contingency had yet to choose sides, as had the Kav-Lao Construct and the Interimperial Territories. Eventually, the former two did pledge their support in service to the Emperor, while the latter two swore oaths of neutrality, much to the anger of Ki'Rasa En Sovalon, the current Costan Emperor and Keeper of the Capital Vanguard.
