Dr. Lawrence Gordon is the man who diagnosed John Kramer's cancer and was initially a suspect in the Jigsaw case. John targeted Lawrence for being cold and uncaring, and for cheating on his wife Diana by having an affair with his medical student, Carla Song. Lawrence was placed in a trap alongside Adam Stanheight and was tasked with killing him before 6 AM or his wife and daughter would be killed. He failed to do so, but severed his own foot to free himself from his shackle, and crawled away to get help, promising Adam He would bring someone back. Lawrence passed out after using a hot steam pipe to cauterize his ankle stump. John found him unconscious shortly after and helped him recover, fitting him with a prosthetic foot.

John recruited Lawrence afterwards, and used his medical skills to prepare other traps. He prepared a variety of traps for John, such as putting the key in Micheal's eye in the venus flytrap (Saw II). Following John's death, his ex-wife Jill delivered a package to Lawrence that had been left to her in John's will; it contained a videotape with instructions from John to watch over Jill and act on his behalf if anything was to happen to her. When Detective Mark Hoffman kills Jill and attempts to flee the city, he is ambushed by three people in pig masks, led by Lawrence. After chaining Hoffman to a pipe in the bathroom, Lawrence throws the hacksaw he used to sever his own foot out of the room, and leaves Hoffman to die.
