Senapati is the Hindi word for general and Mahasenapati means great general. It is cognate with duke or Herzog and like this word means army leader (from sena =army + pati=lord, leader). Senapati, Manipur is the district headquarters of Senapati district in the state of Manipur in India.

Senapati District is located in the northern part of Manipur bordered the Phek districts on the South and Ukhrul district on the east. The general topography of the district is hilly. The hills run in the north to south alignment gradually slopping down to south meeting the plain of Manipur valley. Senapati, the gateway of Manipur, National Highway 39 stretches through the heart of the district Sekmai in the South to Mao, the last town Manipur, dordered the Nagaland in the North end. Total land area of 80% of the district is forest and 20% is arable land. The land is rich of flora and fauna. The forest is adorned with centuries old trees. The district comes under humid Sub-tropical climate.

The Senapati District has a total population of 2,83,621 according to 2001 census. Senapati is a district having various ethnic communities Poumai, Mao, Marams, Thangals, kukis, Zeliangrongs, Tangkhuls,Marings, Chirus, Vaipheis, Koirengs, Nepalese and others.Manipuri is the lingua-fraca of the various communities in the district. Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism are the main religion of the people in the district. Christianity is the predominant religion of the people in the district. Paddy, maize,potato, cabbage, cereals are the main economic crops of the district. Rice is the main food stay of people. The cattle, buffalo, pig, goat are the main animals reared in the district.
