"Wikipedia's Dark Matter: Translation" Conference calling for papers and participants! edit

"Understanding Wikipedia’s Dark Matter: Translation and Multilingual Practice in the World’s Largest Online Encyclopaedia" Conference will be held on 15-17 December 2021 virtually by Centre for Translation under Hong Kong Baptist University. The conference is calling for papers till 30 June 2021.

Translation is the "Dark Matter" of Wikipedia because while most projects contain significant amount of translation material, only a very small amount of them is explicitly referenced by the Translated Page template. The conference will discuss research methodologies, the difference of Wikipedia translation from other types of translation, and how may Wikipedia by useful in teaching translation. Possible keynote speech topics include "Towards understanding Wikipedia: Uncover the disputes behind the scenes!", "Corpus-based Wikipedia studies: Theoretical and methodological challenges for translation scholars", "Digital research methods to identify, analyze and visualize conflicts in Wikipedia's translation-related articles" and "Tales of the "fish in your ear": How does Wikipedia help to shape a public narrative on interpreting?".

Two research workshops, on "Digital tools for researching Wikipedia" and "Scraping Wikipedia articles", will also be held.
