Fanene[1] is the founder and first to carry the Fanene name hailing from the village of Falealili on the island of Upolu in Western Samoa. According to Dr. Augustin Krämer[2], Fanene was the child from the union of one chief Tafilipepe 'o le alo o Matagitau i Nofoali'i and Tofono, a chief's daughter. Through his union with chiefess Samalaulu i Saluafata, Fanene sired Te'o, a renowned warrior in Samoan history.
Descent from Pili Pili, a dimly remembered figure from Samoan legend was either a Samoan or Tahitian chief of high rank (who incidentally appears also in Hawaiian legend as a founder of the kapu system), sired a son named Tolufale ("Three Houses") through his union with a daughter of Tuiaana Tava'etele.
