Burrard Yacht Club Marina

Burrard Yacht Club[1] (BYC) is a yacht club located on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet in Vancouver, British Columbia. It operates one main marina in North Vancouver, as well as six outstations along the coast of British Columbia. Burrard Yacht Club is comprised of both power and sailing pleasure crafts, which average between 25 and 60 feet in length. Some of the larger docking slips have covered moorage, but the majority is exposed. The club consists of an office, workshop and tool room, entertaining/meeting room facilities, and a dingy dock. At the main marina, the yacht club has lifejackets, kayaks and paddleboards for the use of its members. The yacht club is also known for its sailing programs in which people can learn with small Walker Bay sailboats. It also has lifejackets for children and water toys such as kayaks and paddleboards for members to barrow.

History

edit

Burrard Yacht Club was founded on May 5, 1982. The yacht club was created through the Vancouver Rowing Club, which was established in 1899. BYC moved its location to the North Shore of Vancouver in 1977, where it remains today. The original members conducted the successful move of the docks and boats to the yacht club's new location. 98% of new memberships have accumulated since the 1977 move.

Membership

edit

There are different variations of membership depending on the age of a person and his or her intended activity level within the yacht club. BYC has lower rates for children and other people who are less active within the club. Members who choose to use the moorage at BYC pay a fee that is determined by the size of the slip and length of the boat. This fee is charged on top of the membership fee, which is independent from any moorage fees.

Access to moorage is based on seniority within the club. There is not enough docking space for each member to keep their boat at the main marina, so slips and preference are first offered to those with the most seniority.
