Society of Les Voyageurs is a student organization composed of students at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. The group's focus is on enjoying the outdoors in life's work and play. Founded in 1907 by Elmer "Lindy" Lehndorff, the Society is the oldest society at the University of Michigan still in existence today.
From the Constitution of 1994:
"The object of this Society shall be to promote social and intellectual intercourse among its members, to promote a loyalty to The University of Michigan, and to promote its members’ interest in outdoor life and enjoyment of nature."[1]
The Society has nuturted the careers of academics, foresters, biologists and engineers. A most notable alumni, Laurence McKinley Gould, served as the chief scientist on Richard E. Byrd's first expidition to Antartica in 1928-1930. On his expedition, Gould took a Les Voyageurs banner to include in photographs. The banner and photograph at the South Pole still hang today in the Les Voyageurs' cabin on the Huron River in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
