Born in Berhampur, Charu Roy চারু রায় received his early training in painting from the local sculptor, Broja Pal. After completion of his B.Sc. from the Presidency College, Calcutta he devoted himself completely to painting and was associated with the Indian Society of Oriental Art. Unfortunately, financial trouble forced him to take up a job at Bird Co. He joined Ananda Bazar Patrika in 1892 and soon became famous as a cartoonist (C.R.). From then on he developed a close link with the stage and made his mark as a successful art director. Later he became an actor of repute and started his career in the film ‘The Light of Asia’ of Mr. Himangshu Roy. Charu Roy was also the art director of this film. As his career progressed he directed many films including Begraha, Chorakanta, Swami, Kinbadanti, Pathik, Daku ki Ladki. He was the first editor of India’s first cine magazine ‘ Bioscope’.
