Antipodes Submarine

Background edit

Antipodes (Perry / Hoffmann / Marlin / SAL) is a 5 person research and tourism submarine that was originally built by Perry Submarines in 1973. The original PC15 was utilized as a diver lock-out sub and operated in oil fields of the North Sea. In 1994, it was rebuilt by Marlin Submarines to be retrofitted with hemi-spherical domes at each end of the hull. The refit, completed in 1995, also added new soft tanks, variable ballast system and exostructure. Renamed the XPC15, it was operated aboard the Mystere --a 150-foot yacht-- between 1996-1999. In 2000 it was purchased by Submarine Adventures, who moved the sub to Milford Sound, New Zealand. Until 2004, it operated as a tourism sub which took thousands of tourists to the bottom of fiords of Milford Sound, reaching depths of 930 feet. In 2009 it was purchased by the company OceanGate, who uses the sub for marine expeditions and deep sea ocean-based scientific research.
