Amateur actors and singers perform in theater, commonly referred to as amateur dramatics. Amateur theater companies may perform plays, revues, musicals, light operas, pantomimes, or variety acts for both social and aesthetic reasons. Productions may be staged in locations ranging from outdoor spaces, community centers, or educational institutions to independent or significant professional theaters.
Since amateur theater typically does not pay its performers, it differs from professional or community theater. Actors' unions normally do not accept amateur actors as members.
THE ARTISTA'S METHOD
How to define "amateur" in the context of theater is up for debate. Anyone who does not take or is not given payment for their services is technically considered an "amateur" in the eyes of the law. "One lacking the expertise of a professional, as in an art," is one way to translate this. A person who pursues an art, science, field of study, or athletic endeavor as a hobby, as opposed to a career, is another.
