Denisa Gannon (Born in 1980) was the first Roma woman to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Early life and education

Denisa Gannon was born in Nový Bydžov , Czech republic to parents of Vlax Roma descent. She is the fifth of six children and is fluent in Romanes, Czech & slovak. She was the only child in her family to go to a mainstream school and her parents could not read or write. Due to her heritage, Gannon was victim of racism ans discrimination as mentioned “I was the only child of Roma origin in my class. The other children were not allowed to talk to me. I was always by myself and didn’t have any friends. Children were made to sit next me as punishment when they misbehaved.”[1] Gannon migrated to the UK with her brother and her son as a divorced, single mother. Gannon passed the equivalent of A-levels whilst studying as a seamstress and looking after her young son.
