  August 1 Colombo The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission announces the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) is still valid. The government says the ongoing confrontations are “not any form of war, only a humanitarian operation” [4]
  August 2 Muttur LTTE cadres launch a large attack on the town of Muttur and three nearby Army detachments at Kattaparichchan, Selvanagar, and Mahindapura. The LTTE infiltrates into Muttur, and security forces initially withdraw from parts of the town, but fight back and repulse the attacks. Peace is restored in Muttur by August 5. [5][6]
  August 3 Muttur 2006 Trincomalee massacre of NGO workers: 15 NGO workers are killed in Muttur [7]
  August 3 Muttur The LTTE fires mortars at Muttur, killing 17 Muslim civilians [8]

  September 4 Sampur Government troops take control of the key town of Sampur and surrounding areas. The LTTE spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan tells the BBC that the LTTE “tactically withdrew” from the town [12][13]
  September 4 Colombo The government Defense Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella says the government is still committed to the ceasefire process [14]
  September 7 Muhamalai LTTE cadres attack Army Forward Defence Lines (FDL). The Army eventually repulses the attack and takes the LTTE 1st FDL. The tigers fall back to their second FDL. Government claims 35 Soldiers and 150 LTTE cadres are killed. [15][16]
  September 17 Kalmunai The Navy sinks a vessel believed to be carrying arms for the LTTE [17]

  September 20 Colombo   The new United States ambassador to Sri Lanka Robert Blake says "The United States is committed to helping Sri Lanka to fight terrorism and we demonstrated this in number of ways." "We are helping the Sri Lankan Military to confront terrorism. We have also consistently called on the LTTE to renounce terrorism and violence in words and deeds and commit themselves to a negotiated settlement" [18]
  September 23 India The Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh refuses to meet a delegation from the LTTE-proxy Tamil National Alliance [19]
  September 25 Pulmoddai A sea clash takes place. The government claims to have killed over 70 Sea Tigers. [20]
