Introduction

Ofoq Publishers (Ofoq means Horizon in Persian Language) is a privately held international publisher founded in 1990 in Tehran, Iran. Today after nearly 20 years of active presence in the publication industry in Iran, Ofoq is among the most prestigious publishers in the region. By the end of year 2008, Ofoq had published more than 720 first print run titles along with 51 editions of Children's Literature Research Quarterly. Ofoq's audiences include a verity of readers from children to adults. Since 1997 Ofoq has grown into a corporation and established a printing house and a distribution company. Last year, Ofoq published 62 new titles and 156 reprints for children, adolescents, and adults

History

Ofoq was established in 1990 by Reza Hasheminejad. Ofoq Publishers was founded as a publishing house and toady, has expanded its board of activities into a wider range. This publishing institution is a founding member of Cultural Society of Children and Adolescences' Publishers of Iran and a member of Alliance of Book Publishers and Seller in Tehran. Ofoq Publishers has been successful in gaining trust of many well-known Iranian authors, among whom Ahmad Gholami, Mohammad Reza Shams, and Mahsa Moheb Ali are of more national and international fame. Moreover, many reputable Iranian translators, such as Seyed Mahmoud Hoseinizad and Khojasteh Keyhan collaborate with Ofoq.


Book Genres

Ofoq Publishers' titles range from novels, political and illustrated books to a wide collection of Children's titles. Since children's books play a major role in Ofoq's products a special division for this genre has been established. This division of Ofoq Publishers is called Fandoq.


Copyright

Although Iran is not a member in International Copyright Convention for books, Ofoq has shown interest in enervating these laws. Therefore, Ofoq is among few Iranian publishers, who act in this field. Until this day, Ofoq has obtained the Persian Rights for 34 titles, among which are five titles by the reknown American author, Paul Auster, two titles by Peter Stamm, one encyclopedia by Kingfisher Publishing, two titles by Prof. Noam Chomsky, and titles by Uwe Timm, Judith Herman, and John Banville. This approach has brought about collaboration with international publishers such as Kingfisher, Oxford University Press, Macmillan, Surhrkump Verlag, and many literary agencies. Moreover, Ofoq will publish 11 more titles by the end of this year.


Theoretical Quarterly

Ofoq started the publication of a research, educational, and analytical quarterly n 1995, which was called "The Research Quarterly of Children and Youth's Literature". This periodical attracted scholars, literary critics, and creators. During these 15 years many of its articles and authors have gained considerable respect and national awards. Some have been chosen as the Best Critique of the Year in Iran.


Ofoq's Bookstores

Ofoq Publishers has established three bookstores in Tehran and Karaj. In these stores book lovers can read their books in a friendly, quiet atmosphere. They even can enjoy a wide spectrum of facilities Ofoq has considered for them. These facilities include discount for buying the titles, sending birthday gifts to their loved ones, book delivery to their houses, and membership in circle of Ofoq's internal newsletter (Ofoq Today) recipients. Members can gain new information regarding Ofoq's recently published titles and future books. Additionally, they can have access to electronic version of Ofoq Today by email and all its literary critiques, interviews, and other articles.


Ofoq in International Fairs

This Iranian Publishers has been present in many international book fairs during its active years. Cairo International Book Fair, Bologna International Children's Book Fair and Frankfurt International Book Fair are among international events Ofoq has been a participant in the recent years. Additionally, in the up coming Frankfurt Book Fair 2010 Ofoq'a founder, Reza Hasheminejad, will participate in a panel called "Educational Book Market in Iran" to discuss the potential and details of this proliferating market.


Awards and Honors

Many of Ofoq titles have achieved national and international fame. Many of them have won reputable awards in and out of Iran, and many have been accredited by significant international organizations, active in the field of book publication. Ofoq was selected as the Publisher of the year in 1996 and 1998 in Iran, winner of "Honor Diploma" from Tehran International Biennale of Illustration, the Best Partner of the 9th and 13th Tehran International Book Fair, and Selected Stand of Private Children's Publishers in the twenty second Tehran International Book Fair. Moreover, a number of illustrators, authors, and translators who have cooperated with Ofoq during the past years, have won numerous national and international awards. For instance, in the year 2005 Firoozeh Golmohammadi, one the most notable Iranian illustrators won the Chitrakala Awards 2005 for her illustrated book, called "Elephant in a Dark Room" which was published by Ofoq. Moreover, "The Maniac and the Well" by Mohammad Reza Shams and the translation of "Parnian and Pesarak" have won awards and honor certificate from iBbY.
