Smiju was born and raised in Ezhumattoor near Mallappally in the Pathanamthitta district of the state of Kerala, India in a middle class family. He was the youngest son of the family. His father Joy thomas was an agriculturist and his mother Shanthama was a housewife. He did his high school at CMS High school, Mallappally and then studied bachelor's degree in Economics at Thiruvalla Mar Thoma College.He married Stella Jacob on 2014,
