Windhoek High SchoolItalic text'

Introduction Windhoek high School (WHS) is a school with a 94 year history. Named after the city in which the school is located, the school has become the embodiment of academic excellence in Namibia. This article will focus on the school and look at some accepts including the history, sport and academics.

History The school is located on the corner of Sam Nujoma Drive and Robert Mugabe Ave.[1] The school was established in early in the 20th century, 1917, as one of only a very few number of high/secondary schools in the city at the time. The school took the colour blue for it is official uniform and is also known as “die blou skool”, in Afrikaans or “the blue school” in English. [2] The school adopted the motto “Virtus Floreat”, Latin for “Virtue Flourishes”. [3]

Sport WHS has a proud and very long sport history that equally matches the achievements made academically. But rugby has always been the life blood of WHS sports. This is evident if one would look at the current Namibian rugby team that participated in this year’s rugby world. WHS has as many as 6 players who made the final cut for the world cup. They include Jacques Burger (Captain), Eugene Jantjies (Vice Captain), Ryan de la Harpe, Tinus du Plessis, Pieter jan van Lill and Darryl de la Harpe. [4] When it comes to athletics, WHS has an Interhouse annually. The Interhouse or “Interhuis” in Afrikaans, is made up of 3 teams. They are called “Wag ‘n Bietijie” in blue, “Kanniedood” in yellow and “Swarthaak” in red. At the very moment Kanniedood has the upper hand with the most annually wins [5]. But that can all change soon considering the competitive nature of the games. WHS also usually compete with other schools, including arch-rivals Jan Mohr and Academia on a regularly basis with WHS usually ending on tops.

Academics “With its 90-year tradition of proven academic excellence, Windhoek High School is rated one of the top 100 schools in Africa. In this multicultural school, we promote a holistic learning environment to mold the younger generation to become balanced, motivated and well-educated Namibian citizens. WHS has been going for 90 years. Watch us for another 90…” [6]. WHS is always rated among the top schools whenever the grade 10 & 12 results come out, this rating is done between both public and private schools in the country of Namibia.
