Thomas Hazard (1610-1689) is one of the early founders and first officers of Newport, Rhode Island and the progenitor of the Hazard family of Rhode Island.


Biography

Little is known of Thomas Hazard before his arrival in the New World. He is first found in Boston, Massachusetts where he was admitted a freeman in 1638. On April 28, 1839, he signed a contract prepatory to the creation of Newport, Rhode Island with William Coddington, Nicholas Easton, John Coggeshall, William Brenton, John Clarke, Jeremy Clarke and Henry Bull. [1].

Thomas Hazard married Martha ______, who died in 1669. Some sources list her maiden name as Potter, but there is no evidence to support this. Thomas Hazard's second wife was Martha Sheriff, widow of Thomas Sheriff, who died in 1691.


Descendants

Thomas Hazard had four known children.

Robert Hazard (1635-1710); married Mary Brownell (1639-1739. As the only son of Thomas Hazard, he is the ancestor of all family members bearing the Hazard name. Notable descendants include Hazard Stevens, John Paul Stevens, Wheeler Hazard Peckham, Rufus Wheeler Peckham, Oliver Hazard Perry, Matthew Calbraith Perry, Augustus George Hazard, Fanny Bullock Workman, Isaac Peace Rodman and Frances Folsom Cleveland.

Elizabeth Hazard; married George Lawton (d. 1693). Their daughter Mary Lawton (1644-1711) married John Babcock (1644-1685) and became progenitors of many Americans bearing the Babcock name including Orville Elias Babcock, Harold Delos Babcock, Ernest Brown Babcock, Horace Welcome Babcock, Edward Vose Babcock, Henry Stoddard Babcock, Tim Milford Babcock, Ira Leonard Babcock, Joseph Park Babcock and George Herman Babcock (co-founder of the Babcock-Wilcox Co.).

Hannah Hazard; married Stephen Wilcox (b. 1633). Their descendants include Stephen Wilcox (1830-1893), co-founder of the Babcock-Wilcox Co.

Martha Hazard; married 1st Ichabod Potter (d. 1676), married 2nd Benjamin Mowry. Their descendants include Elisha Reynolds Potter and Samuel J. Potter.
