The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) holds Division I Championship contests in the 400 meter dash on an annual basis. There are four NCAA Division I Championship finals in the 400 m each year: the Men's Outdoor and Indoor Championships, and the Women's Outdoor and Indoor Championships.
Initially, NCAA track and field competitions were for men only and the event was contested over a distance of 440 yards (402.336 m). Frank Shea became the first NCAA champion in the 440-yard dash in 1921 and Theron Lewis was the champion in the event at the first NCAA Indoor Championship 1965.[1][2] The sprinting event was changed to its modern metric equivalent at the 1976 NCAA Outdoor Championship, although the imperial distance remained in usage at indoor championships until 1984. Following the enactment of Title IX into United States law, participation in women's sports increased exponentially,[3] which led to the creation of a women's outdoor championship in 1982 and an indoor one in 1983. Marita Payne was the first women's 400 m champion in 1982 and Diane Dixon became the first indoor champion the following year.[4][5] Since 1984, there have been annual championship races in the 400 meter dash for both men and women, at indoor and outdoor arenas.
