History

Linguistically Onandjaba name was derived from Oshimbadja the language they speak,that means an elephant place because most of the people in there came from OMBADJA in Angola in the early 1930's. This area is situated in the middle part of Omusati region. Onandjaba is an under-development town village in Okalongo constituency situated 60KM from the main town in the North which is Oshakati and it is close to the border of Namibia and Angola, which gives it a platform to the Angolan citizens to come shop and receive medical service in this village. According to the traditional review on History Journal (2000), Onandjaba is under the authority of King Matias Walaula and he took over from the previous leader that was ruling during colonial apartheid in the early 1969.

Economic development

Many sources describe Onandjaba as an open place where business and productive activities that are relevant to the development of the region can take place. Example The Namibian dated 21 July 2009 reported that a new complex was opened in Okalongo district in Onandjaba village, which recruit many unemployed people in the environment. “Onandjaba is growing at vigorous pace and we expect it to be at the standard where big towns and cities are in few years to come” The former council of Okalongo John Hakaye (2009). It implies that Onandjaba is expected to be at the level where Oshakati is, because hospitals, schools and some regional government offices are situated in this small town. The government budget plan (2009) included the constriction of tarred road from Oshikuku to Okalongo which gives good access to investors to come build and invest through business in this village. This infrastructure has facilitated the trade between Angola and Namibia business people. In conclusion Onandjaba village serves as a hub for trade and other economic activities between Angola and Namibia residents living in this area.It should be noted as well that Onandjaba is growing at rapid development and the government should encourage the investment in small and medium enterprises to residents in Okalongo to contribute to the GDP through taxes and charges.

Population statistics

The Census 2011 indicated that there are 5200 people living in the village of Onandjaba, with 2400 male and 2800 female and unemployment rate of 68%. Adding on to this there is seven (6) schools in the town of Onandjaba including Haudano SSS which is the only high school in the town.
