Shelley Bernstein is the Deputy Director of Digital Initiatives and Chief Experience Officer at the Barnes Foundation. As the former Vice Director of Digital Engagement & Technology at the Brooklyn Museum she spearheaded digital projects with public participation at their center. In the most recent example—ASK Brooklyn Museum—visitors ask questions using their mobile devices and experts answer in real time. She organized three award-winning projects—Click! A Crowd-Curated Exhibition, Split Second: Indian Paintings, GO: a community-curated open studio project—which enabled the public to participate in the exhibition process. Shelley was named one of the 40 Under 40 in Crain's New York Business and her work on the Museum's digital strategy has been featured in the New York Times. Shelley joined the staff at the Barnes Foundation in 2016. Shelley has worked on several projects to enhance Wikipedia including:

  • Organized the original Wikipedia Loves Art project with user:Pharos. Four-part lessons learned about the project are published on the Brooklyn Museum blog.
  • Worked on a project to cross-post all public domain and "no known copyright" image assets from the Brooklyn Museum to Wikimedia Commons and created a project on the Brooklyn Museum Collection Labs to look at how the Wiki community were using those uploaded assets. Info about both projects can be found on the Brooklyn Museum blog.
  • Worked on a project to enhance the wikipedia articles of 25 female pop artists and use ipads to bring that data back into the gallery for a exhibition at the museum in 2010.
