The Pittsburgh Panthers men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of the University of Pittsburgh. The team competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference of the NCAA.
History
editPitt fielded its first varsity men's soccer team in 1954 under head coach Leo Bemis. The Panthers enjoyed early success, playing to an 8-1-0 record in their first season of competition and earning berths in the NCAA championships of 1962 and 1965.
After a 30-year tenure as head coach, Bemis was succeeded by Joe Luxbacher, a former standout player and captain for the program, for the 1984 season. Luxbacher led the Panthers as they began play in the Big East Conference the following season. The Panthers had a strong start under Luxbacher, appearing in the 1985 Big East Tournament, but lost their first game and went on to only two more tournament appearances, with only one tournament victory, in the Big East.
In 2013, Pitt moved to the Atlantic Coast Conference, bringing the Panthers into a historically strong league with 15 national championships in mens' soccer.
