List of Volcanoes on Mars
The following is a list of known volcanoes on Mars
Large Shield: Prominent, among the first volcanoes to be discovered on Mars and interpreted as albedo features of mountain origin from Earth. Their size has no analogue on Earth.
Medium Shield: Regionally prominent, were discovered during the Mariner 9 Mission. They rival large shield volcanoes on Earth in size.
Low Shield: Low lying short lived shield volcanoes. Discovered from Viking imagery. Analogues can be found in Iceland and the Snake River Plain.
Highland Patera: Likely a byproduct of a depleted deep magma chamber, no analogues can be found on Earth but some comparisons have been drawn with coronae on Venus.
Lowland Patera: Similar to Highland Paterae except these straddle the Mars Dichotomy
Flood Basalt: Long fissures featuring fluid water-like flows of lava similar to flood basalts on Earth.
Stratovolcano: Similar in size to the largest stratovolcanoes on Earth, most of these date from the Noachian Period.
Tharsis: Largest volcanic province on Mars, dominates the western hemisphere
Elysium: Second largest volcanic province, situated between Utopia and Amazonis Planitia
Circum-Hellas Highland: Extensive ancient volcanic province surrounding Hellas Planitia
Arabia Terra: Series of suspected supervolcanic calderas in Arabia Terra
Isolated: These volcanoes are isolated from other structures
NOTE: Not all Montes, Tholi, or Paterae have volcanic origins. Examples of non-volcanic constructs sharing these labels include: Coprates Montes, Nia Tholus, and Phison Patera
