Tomás Sharkey

Tomás Sharkey is a Sinn Féin County Councillor in County Louth. He was born in 1976. Tomás studied in DCU, Queen's University Belfast, NUI Maynoth and qualified as a second level teacher in Gaeilge. He taught in St Macartans College Monaghan, Ardee Community School and Bush Post Primary School. Tomás has been seconded to the Department of Eduation and Science to develop teachers skills in promoting spoken Irish.

Tomás Sharkey was co-opted onto Louth County Council in 2003 to replace Deputy Arthur Morgan. He was the sole SF ouncillor at that time. The 2004 local electins saw a huge surge in support and Tomás became leader of Sinn Féin's group of 5 County Councillors and 6 Town Councillors. He married Caroline Slevin, a successful local businesswoman two weeks before that election in 2004. He was noted for listening to the declaration of his election from an airport payphone on the journey to honeymoon in Bora Bora, French Polynesia.

Tomás Sharkey has been a controversial member of the Regional Health Forum of the HSE and disclosed in the media details about the Radiology Misdiagnosis Scandal in the Region in 2008. He is a Sinn Féin candidate for the Ireland East Euro-Constituency, following in the footsteps of his father Martin who contested the same election in 2004.
