DUCKHAM MILLIONS

Probably the largest amount of money never claimed in over 100 years

The story concerns an Englishman, Thomas Duckham by name, which in the days of the Regency emigrated to the United States of America. In the year following the battle of Waterloo he appeared in Kentucky, and there he acquired an estate running to 30,000 acres. Some thirty years later he died in Proctor, Lee County, Kentucky without leaving a will to dispose of the mineral rights of the vast property which he had held.

The unclaimed money came from the mineral rights that Thomas Duckham had kept from reserving the rights from the ground in land deeds, and it would be reasonable to say that in todays money more than TWO BILLLON pounds have been lost by the living heirs of Thomas Duckham.

One deed he reserved the mineral rights was to Oliver Crawford 16 October 1839. Another was to Edward Kincaid for 22,000 acres in Menefee and Wolfe counties around Glady creek and Swift Camp on the 09 June, 1843. Swift Camp Creek is located around Campton, the seat of Wolfe County. Swift Camp Creek at what is popularly thought to be the site of one of Jonathan Swift's camps. (There are legends going back to the late eighteenth century about Swift's lost silver mine somewhere in the area.)

During the late 1920's there where various court cases and regarding mineral rights. Land owners and oil companies went to court' during the 1930's when the Kentucky Millions story became International it was proven that the 1000 acres that Thomas Duckham reserved the mineral rights that neither the oil company or the land owner had the rights to the minerals from the ground, and as a result it became a International Story. Newspaper all over the world where requesting the true heirs to come forward and make there claim to possible share of $35,000,000 from mineral rights. As of yet to this very present day there's has not been a successful claim made, and the search continues.

THE LAND

During the 1900 century Mr Thomas Duckham bought and sold land during 1816 to 1851. There are various courts deeds that confirm the sale and purchase of land bought and sold during these periods. Copies of these deeds can be purchased from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, P.O. Box 537, Frankfort, KY 40602-0537, USA. Alternately you can apply on-line.

In order to understand the land purchases by Thomas Duckham, we have have a general understanding of some of the early surveys:

On the 28th of February 1784 "Listed in under the Fayette County Deeds Book 3, Page 190" the Three Forks along the Kentucky River 300,306 2/3 acres was jointly purchased by 16 people. Amoung the people where Jno. Carman (Carnan), Carrnegg & Paul, Jno. Bullard, Dean & Dean, Ballis Emerick, Goddard & Dery, Robt Hodgson, E.S. Platt, Nicholas Rash, P.D. Roberts, Tarrison & Bros, Elexie Testo, Ephram & Richard Thomson, Sennings G. Westcott, William Will, and Samuel Young.

THE KENTUCKY LAND GRANTS 1782-1792

Thomas Duckham bought and sold land on the following Kentucky land patents:-

4. John Carnan - 20,150 acres
5. John Carnan - 10,000 acres

CHARLES VANCOUVER - 8,000 ACRES

Known as the “Big Sandy Patent” it lies the big sandy valley in Lawrence County, Kentucky and borders West Virginia.

DEAN TIMMONS - 22,000 ACRES

Dean Timmonds - 22,000 acres adjoining Samuel Youngs Survey of 30,973 1/3 acres. The land lies between Menefee & Wolfe Counties in Kentucky. Thomas Duckham sold land to his friend Edward Kincaid on the 09th June 1843. Edward Kincaid is listed with Thomas Duckham on the 1850 Census in Owsley County, Kentucky.

We have looked at the deeds and have noticed that Thomas Duckham did reserve some of the mineral rights within the deeds, and this land could cover the Campton Oil Pool in Wolfe County.

On the 09th June 1843 Thomas Duckham sells 22,000 acres (Thomas Duckham previously sold tracts of land to Powell Rose, James Cox and James P. McGowan "2 x Parcels"; "Dean Timmons patented 22,000 acres") to Edward Kincaid in Menefee and Wolfe County, Kentucky and reserves mineral rights. The first deed conveys a certain boundary within the twenty-two thousand-acre survey, but "reserves" to the grantor "all minerals and mines in the bowels of the boundary" conveyed, "and one-half of the timber included in said boundary, and a mill-site on Glady creek." his second deed conveys a certain other boundary of land within said twenty-two thousand-acre survey, but reserves to the grantor "one-half of all the mines and minerals in the bowels of the earth" within said boundary, and "one-half of the timber thereon," except on the south side of the river. On that side he reserves all of the timber, except that which is "on Swift Camp."

JOHN CARNAN - 29,823 - 20,150 - 10,000 ACRES

On January 4, 1786, the Commonwealth of Virginia, acting through Patrick Henry, then the governor, granted to John Carnan a patent for 29,823 acres of land lying on Kentucky river in what was then Fayette county, Virginia. On the 10/05/1793 John Carnan sold 17,823 acres to Thomas Flanhaven' record listed in the Fayette County Deeds Book A2 page 616. On the 27th September 1787 John Carnan sells 10,000 acres (Watercouse - North Fork' Three Forks' Kentucy River) to Samual Young also listed in the Fayette County Deeds Book. Thomas Duckham bought this land for $7,450 in the city of Baltimore 21st September 1816.

RICHARD THOMSON - 27,000 ACRES

Listed in Estill County, Kentucky. Thomas Duckham bought and sold land within the area, and that the Richard Thomson 27,000 patent lies next to Samuel Young's 30,987 acres. We have looked at the deeds for this land, and there doesn't appear to be any minerals rights which have been reserved by Thomas Duckham.

SAMUEL YOUNG - 30,987 ACRES

Very little is know about this land, we know it was in situated in Estill County, Kentucky.

Note:- Thomas Duckham also bought a further 10,000 and 23,000 acres at the Red River in the County Montgomery, Kentucky at Lexington in 1816 confirmed at the Court of Appeals 23rd August 1839.

OLIVER CRAWFORD

On the 16th October 1839, Thomas Duckham, conveyed a large boundary of land lying within the Carnan patent to Oliver Crawford a tract of about 1,000 acres, part of the Carnan tract referred to, "reserving all mines and minerals in the bowels of the earth." The land was described: "Beginning at Cole's line at Beale's rock house; thence with the ridge to the mouth of Little Sinking, crossing the mouth; Little and Big Sinking to Billy's fork of Miller's creek; thence down Billy's fork to Cole's line; thence back with Cole's line to the place of beginning" On the 26th October 1875 Oliver Crawford conveyed to Jacob Crabtree part of the 1000 acres. He also owned 1,100 acres of land on Holly Creek, Wolfe Co., KY.

CRABTREE & PENDERGRASS

There are at least two more farms within the "Big Sinking" (Quadrangle Zachariah) that are important to the location of the this story; they are Crabtree and Pendergrass Heirs. At the Court of Appeals of Kentucky - Pendergrass, et al. v. Swiss Oil Corporation dated 14th December 1926 several defendants tried to claim their rights under title in D.P. Pendergrass and H.G. Crabtree of the ownership or possession of either the surface or mineral estates in the 12 and 8 acre tracts, within the 240-acre tract / Milford F. Cable farm. It was proven that the 240-acre tract was in fact laid outside the boundaries of defendants, and they where not able to claim. The question that did arise, during the court case, is that if Pendergrass and Crabtree weren’t able to claim the mineral rights then as the mineral rights in 240 acres was reserved by Thomas Duckham surely the oil company wasn’t able to claim as well, the courts said is wasn’t a question for Pendergrass and Crabtree to be asking but only could be determined by the owners of the mineral estate and the oil company. As a result of the out come of the court case it then became an International Story, and people where requested to come forward and claim.

The locations of Milford F. Cable farm, borders between quadrangles Cobhill and Zachariah, in Lee County, Kentucky, and is located at latitude 37.689677 degrees north, longitude 83.74416 degrees west.

BIG SINKING, LEE COUNTY, KY (1,000 ACRES - RESERVED MINERALS) The following Farms have produced minerals in and around the 1,000 acres reserved by Thomas Duckham in the Quadrangle (16-O-70) Zachariah and Cobhill in Lee County, Kentucky.

In order to proceed with a valid court claim for the mineral rights of Thomas Duckham's the following documents would have to be purchased. The box was originally known as "Box 142" and was kept in drawer No. 1254 at the Circuit Court Clerks office, Court House, Lexington, Ky., its now refiled under A-47-N-4-D and is located at the Kentucky Archives. It contains court files and documents regarding his property and land. The documents where discovered by Mr Alfred E. Duckham from Pittsburgh, PA, USA in preparation to make a file court claim.

ALFRED S WILLIAMS - DIPLOMATIC AGENT

Mr Alfred S Williams was born in Dec 1873 Newport Wales, He was the son of Samuel D Williams born Abt. 1851 Manchester, England and Martha Kewer born Abt. 1852 Moorlinch, Somerset, England. Alfred had one brother called Reginald F Kewer Williams born in 1878 Newport, Wales. Mr Williams lived at Moorlinch, 8, Faulker Road, Newport, Mon, Wales and worked with his brother Reginald as a printer at William Press Ltd. Mr Alfred S Williams researched various families that where assumed to be connected to Thomas Duckham during the 1920's – 1930's I have managed to organize the research that was covered by Alfred Samuel Williams - Agent-Plenipotentiary.

During the 1930's as the Kentucky millions became an international story people over the world came forward to claim to be descendants of Thomas Duckham. He became the agent-plenipotentiary for Claimants in the Estate of Thomas Duckham, Deceased, Kentucky, U.S.A. in 1930. Agent Plenipotentiary is a person, esp. a diplomatic agent, invested with full power or authority to transact business on behalf of another. During my research I have managed to identify his business affairs regarding the Duckham Millions story. Mr Alfred S Williams made four visits to the United States:-

• 1929 Alfred S Williams departs from London on SS Minnesota 21 Sep 1929 and arrived New York 01 Oct 1929 and J.C. Moore, Esq. from 465 California St, San Francisco, California, USA was listed as a friend.

• 1930 Alfred S Williams departs from Southampton on SS Leviathan 07 Oct 1930 and arrived New York 13 Oct 1930 and Albert Duckham at 1323 4th Ave, Pittsburgh, PA was listed as a friend, Alfred S Williams departed New York 13 Nov 1930. Alfred S Williams gets Power of Attorney "6 women and 2 old men" from London

• 1931 Alfred S Williams - writes letters to heirs asking permission to make a claim, and gets power of attorney from Plymouth. He confirms finding will for Sarah Bellamy sister of Thomas Duckham from Washfield, Devon, England. Alfred S Williams departs London on SS Minnekahda on the 13 June 1931 and arrived New York 23 June 1931 and M.P. Robinson c/o Public State Library, Richmond, VA was listed as a friend, Alfred S Williams departed New York 25 July 1931.

• 1932 Alfred S Williams departs on his last trip to make claim to the Kentucky Courts he leaves Southampton on SS Berengaria on the 08 Oct 1932 and he arrived New York 14 Oct 1932 and used Mess RS. Kecley & Howell, Beattyville, Kentucky as a business c/o address.

The following three family groups in the next chapter covers the investigation work conducted by Alfred S Williams:-

DUCKHAMS OIL FAMILY

One of the first family groups to respond to the International News reports was Alexander Duckham, founder of the DUCKHAMS OIL company 100 years ago' was born in Blackheath, South London, on 11 March 1877. His father Frederick, a Cornishman by birth was born in 1841 Falmouth, Cornwall he married Maud Mary McDougall, Frederick's father Alfred Benjamin Duckham was born 22 Oct 1809 Falmouth, Cornwall and was the son of John Duckham born Apr 1772 Tiverton, Devon, England.

The Duckham's Oil Family line wasn't connected to the Duckham families from Loxbeare & Washfield. There is no evidence in the archives to connect these families together even tho there is a good chance they are long distant relatives.

LOXBEARE FAMILY

The next family line was from Thomas Duckham who was born abt. 1786 Loxbeare, Devon, England his father William Duckham born abt 1733 Loxbeare, Devon, England married on the 06 May 1757 to Hannah BOWDEN born 13 Nov 1726 Stoodleigh, Devon, England. There children where: -

William Duckham is first listed at Loxbeare Barton in 1794 up until his death in 1812 then his son Thomas Duckham takes over the lease in 1813. Thomas is listed as executor of his fathers estate, then he distributes the estate has instructed from the will, and then family relocates to various locations in Devon and Somerset. In 1814 Thomas has five further leases in Loxbeare, then in 1816 the Loxbeare Barton is leased to John Tossnell. The last event that can be linked to Thomas Duckham is the lease at Pantridge, Loxbeare in 1817.

The descendants from this family line soon perished due to failing to prove any family connection, however after further research conducted by my self at the Devon County Record office I did manage to find evidence in linking the family to the Washfield family.

WASHFIELD FAMILY

The ancestors from the second family came from Washfield, Devon. George Duckham had at least four children Mary Duckham born abt 1758' Sarah Duckham born abt 1755' Hester Duckham' and Samuel Duckham bap. 30 Jun 1751, Samuel married Lydia Singlez (nee Anstey) they married on 1st May 1781 and their four children were: - Thomas - Baptised 22nd May 1782, died in Kentucky, U.S.A. 1851. Sally - Baptised 29 January 1784, evidently married (as Sarah) to Thomas Langworthy 3rd February 1809. George - Baptised 12 January 1787, buried 21st August 1814. Elizabeth - died in infancy?

Thomas Duckham was baptised 22nd May 1782 in Washfield, Devon, England his father Samuel Duckham married Lydia Singlep (nee Anstey) 01st May 1781 Washfield, Devon, England. There children where: -

From since the early stages of Thomas Duckham's life the Duckham family had a relatively a short period in the Washfield Village. Samuel Duckham leased Middle Windbow in 1782 and his father George Duckham and was listed has leasing Great Pilemore farm, also Collards and Higher Pit in 1782. Thomas leased the Farm Pilmore in Washfield, Devon from Rev John L. Kitson.

DUCKHAM - PITTSBURGH, PA, USA

For several years researches have tried to link their ancestry family tree to Thomas Duckham in order to claim an equal share of the Kentucky Millions. I can safely say that the Duckham family who settled in Pittsburg, PA, USA where related to Thomas Duckham.

William Duckham was related to the Loxbeare Duckham family he was baptised 22nd Jul 1821 Bishop Lydeard, Somerset and his wife Elizabeth Oldfield was born 11th October 1821 Monmouthshire, Wales they married in Bristol, England 1849, and left England from Liverpool emigrated to the United States of America on the ship named SS Ashburton, they arrived 30th June 1849. They had at least three children all born in Pittsburg, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA. Ellen Duckham was born abt. 1859' Mary E Duckham born abt. 1850 and Albert Edward Duckham born abt. 1863. William Duckham died 04th Nov, 1904. Albert Edward Duckham married Mary S Unangst on the 26th October 1892 Northampton, Pennsylvania, USA. They had at least two children William Albert Duckham born 30th Nov 1894 Pittsburgh, PA, USA and John Edward Duckham born 30th July 1900 died 03rd July 1901. Albert Edward Duckham died 2nd August 1946

William A Duckham became a Commander in the United States Marine Corps 5th Regiment. Having enlisted in April 1917 he went to Washington, D.C. and Port Royal Marine Training-camp, He left Philadelphia on First American Convoy in June to France as a Second Lieutenant, 47th Co, 5th Regt., Marines; Located at St Nazaire until January 1918 and was in the trenches in the spring of 1918. Under the date 12th July at the age of 17 William A. Duckham was Cited and Promoted First Lieutenant on 11th August 1917. After being wounded by splinters from hand-grenade in Belleau Woods, he displayed great coolnesss and bravery by keeping command of his men while under heavy fire. Northwest of Chateau Thierry, in the month of June 1918. William A Duckham was leading his company, in the early part of June, 1918 when the 5th and 6th Marines drove the Germans back at Chateau Thierry and Bois Belleau. Out of the 8000 men who went in to that battle, only 1900 escaped unhurt. He also and took part in the battle Soissons and Champagne. Later he was promoted to captain, and he received a French War Cross with one star and a Wound Stripe for his injuries at Soissons.

Other decorations and awards: Silver star, Purple Heart, Victory Medal with Aisne, Army of Occupation of Germany Medal. Dates of service: 04/1917 to 03/1919 and July 6, 1942 to December 25, 1944.
