Wikimania 2015 - Group photo

Hello Friends, I have just attended Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City. The event was a great success. This is the first time we had one wikipedian each from the two Punjabi Wikipedias. Khalid Mahmood from Pakistan was representing Western Punjabi Wikipedia.

Some sessions in Brief

edit
  • 100wikidays : Vassia mentioned everything about the challenge which is already quite popular in Punjabi Wikimedians. The number of participants in this challenge from Punjabi Wikipedia is just second to Bulgarian Wikipedians. Jimmy Wales also mentioned the challenge in his talk.
  • Making Infoboxes easier to edit and maintain with the help of Wikidata was an interesting presentation. As of now there are some issues related to Templates on Punjabi Wikipedia and they might be fixed using this.
  • Content Translation - translathon and discussion was a learning experience. Many bugs have been fixed as of now. We have a new bot which automatically links the articles if they are translated using the tool.

Community Village

edit

There was a separate stall for Wikimedia India Chapter at Community Village where each community showcased its projects. Many people were amazed of finding out that so many languages exist in India and we have Wikipedias in 22 of these languages. Some people had no clue about Punjabi and some didn't know that it has two Wikipedias. So, Community Village helped a lot in spreading the news related to Punjabi Wikipedia, the competitions we have organized and the growth we have seen in the previous year.

Important Outcomes

Jimmy Wales giving a hug to Satdeep Gill during his talk.
  • Hackathon became quite important for Punjabi Wikipedia as two gadgets were fixed with the help of WMF employee Mathew Flaschen.
  • Wikimedia SAARC - This will be just like Wikimedia CEE or Iberconf and will boost collaborations between the SAARC nations.
  • Asian Wiki Meetup - The Asian Community got together for a meetup and discussed how we can work as a group.
  • Luis Von Ahn - After a talk with the CEO of Duolingo, it is quite probable that we will soon have Duolingo in Punjabi.
  • Jimmy's Talk - A thing to be proud of for the whole Punjabi Wiki Community is that Jimmy Wales mentioned Punjabi Wikipedia and two Punjabi Wikipedians on stage. He also mentioned that it is the fastest growing Indic Project as of now.
