Storage

Meaning: Storage holds data, instructions, and information for future use. A storage medium is the physical material on which a computer keeps data , instructions, and information. Electronic data storage requires electrical power to store and retrieve that data. Most storage devices that do not require vision and a brain to read data fall into this category. Electromagnetic data may be stored in either an analog data or digital data format on a variety of media. This type of data is considered to be electronically encoded data, whether it is electronically stored in a semiconductor device, for it is certain that a semiconductor device was used to record it on its medium. Most electronically processed data storage media (including some forms of computer data storage) are considered permanent (non-volatile) storage, that is, the data will remain stored when power is removed from the device. In contrast, most electronically stored information within most types of semiconductor (computer chips) microcircuits are volatile memory, for it vanishes if power is removed.

Example of Storage:

Internal hard disc, External hard disc, Network attached storage device, Microfilm, Magnetic Stripe card., Smart card, Optical disc, Miniture hard disc. Solid state drive, Memory cards, USB flash drive, Express card module, Cloud storage, Capacity is the number of bytes a storage medium can hold.

Storage Terms

Kilobyte (KB) = 1 thousand Megabyte (MB) = 1 million Gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion Terabyte (TB) = 1 trillion Petabyte (PB) = 1 quadrillion Exabyte (EB) = 1 quintillion Zattabyte(ZB) = 1 sextiliion Yottabyte(YB) = 1 septilion Storage Device

measures:The amount of time it takes a storage device to locate an item on a storage medium and The time required to deliver an item from memory to the processor.Access time is the process of transferring items from memory to a storage medium Writingis the process of transferring items from a storage medium into memory. Reading is any hardware capable of holding information either temporarily or permanently. There are two types of storage devices used with computers: a primary storage device, such as RAM, and a secondary storage device, like a hard drive. Secondary storage can be removable, internal, or external storage. storage device

Optical Disc - Davern

An optical disc is an electronic data storage medium that can be written to and read using a low-powered laser beam. Optical discs are usually between 7.6 and 30 cm (3 to 12 in) in diameter, with 12 cm (4.75 in) being the most common size. An optical disc is designed to support one of three recording types: read-only (CD and CD-ROM), recordable (CD-R), or re-recordable (CD-RW). Optical discs are most commonly used for storing music (CD player), video (Blu-ray player), or data and programs for Personal computer (PC).

Example of optical disc

    !. Compact Disc ( CD )
       - Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format, co-developed by Philips and Sony
    2. CD-RW
       - A CD-RW disc is a compact disc that can be written, read arbitrarily many times, erased, and written again. The technology was inverted in 1997.
    3. DVD
       - DVD is a digital optical disc storage format invented and co-developed by Sony, Philips, Toshiba, and Panasonic in 1995.
    4.Super Audio CD
       - Super Audio CD (SACD) is a read-only optical disc for audio storage, introduced in 1999. It was developed jointly by Sony and Philips Electronics
    5. HD DVD
       - HD DVD is a discontinued high-density optical disc format for storing data and playback of high-definition video

Advantages of optical disc

- Large capacity

- Durability

Disadvantages of optical disc

- Fragile

Care of optical disc

- DO NOT eat, smoke or drink near a disc

- DO NOT expose the disc to excessive heat or sunlight

- DO NOT stack discs

- DO NOT touch the underside of the disc

- DO hold a disc by its edges

- DO store the disc in a jewel box when not in use

Other types of storage devices

TAPE

Magnetic tape data storage is a system for storing digital information on magnetic tape using digital recording. It consists of magnetic materials that store data permanently. Magnetic tape are used for large computers like mainframe computer where large volume of data is stored for a longer time. The cost of storing the data in tape is inexpensive.

TAPE DRIVE

Device that store computer data on magnetic tape Advantages of tape drive

Used for backup and archiving purposes Large capacity for storing data, 2 million digits per tape Economical compared to the cost of hard disk Disadvantages of tape drive

Store data sequentially Can only access specific data by starting at the beginning and rolling through the tape until the desired data is located MAGNETIC STRIPE CARD

Magnetic stripe card is a type of card capable of storing data by modifying the magnetism of tiny iron-based magnetic particles on a band of magnetic material on the card.

Advantages of magnetic stripe card

Simple to use Inexpensive Disadvantages of magnetic stripe card

Limited storage capacity Data can be easily destroyed SMART CARD

Smart card is a pocket-sized card that has embedded integrated circuits. Smart cards can provide personal identification, authentication, data storage, and application processing.[3] Smart cards may provide strong security authentication for single sign-on (SSO) within large organizations.

Advantages of smart card

Portability Increasing data storage capacity Disadvantages of smart card

Target of security attacks Lack of standard for functionality and security MICROFILM

A film bearing a photographic record on a reduced scale of printed or other graphic matter.

MICROFILM MACHINE

Microfilm machine created permanent film copies of bank documents by using a special camera, which took pictures of documents with black and white film.

MICROFICHE

Microfiche is a card made of transparent film used to store printed information in miniaturized form.

Advantages of microfiche

Large storage capacity, contains tens of thousands of pages of material Stable and estimated to last as long as 500 years Disadvantages of microfiche

Special equipment is usually needed to both read and duplicate microfiche cards more difficult to share than digital files ENTERPRISE STORAGE

Enterprise storage is a centralized repository for business information that provides common data management and protection, as well as data sharing functions, through connections to numerous (and possibly dissimilar) computer systems. Enterprise storage are used to consolidate storage.
