My pride, my village: Omandongo

Omandongo is a village located in the northern part of Namibia just in the southern part of Onayena constituency, Ondonga district just 20km from Ondangwa. It consist of about 106 inhabitants.

History

Omandongo is the place in which the first finish missionaries such Martin Rautanen, Botolf Benhard and others arrived. They arrived at the time of King Shikongo Sha Kalulu who welcomed them and showed them where to set up their camp. They established a mission station with the acceptance of the King. This community is the first base of the Finns in Ovamboland. during colonial rules several fights took place in this village.

Economy and development

With the help of small business center, Omandongo established its community trust known as Omandongo Community trust which will be run by Onayena community as tourist center. Residential tend to knows Christians and the first baptisms Ndongas were from Omandongo. Omandongo residents survive in practicing farming such growing plants in which Mahangu and beans are the most and keeping animals like cattle, goats and donkeys and they normal use donkeys and oxes to farm. it is a blessed village in terms of glasses and water this make farming more easier for the residents. There is also a project of fishing which aim to have operational and sustainable fish ponds including a vegetable garden.

Leaders who ruled Omandongo

After the death of Shikongo who died as result of alcohol poisoning, Omandongo ruled by King Kambonde I who ruled from 1874-1883. He followed by Itana yaNankwiyu who ruled just 1883-1884 and later by Kambonde kaMpingana who have just lead for a quarter for a century and died in 1909.
