The Bleakness of the bullied

edit

Summary

edit

I choose this article because it came from the actual mouth of a man that was much bullied, not only by classmates but from extended family as well. Charles explain to his readers how traumatizing being bullied can be. How much fun times can bring back painful memories. there were times he wanted to escape from the world because life was too hard and treacherous, he was weak and vulnerable and even the thought of suicide ran across his mind. But thankfully he didn't. With that experience Charles share with his readers on why he understand what other people are going through based on his own experience and expressed how deadly bullying can be. Which Butler her also faced at one point in her life before she mad successful decisions in her life that changed her forever. I believe that people who share their experiences with other people gives them and others as well an advantage to pull out of depression or even save a life or two.

Octavia Butler

Summary

edit

I choose this article on Butler's life cause it helps readers see where the core of her stories and how she might relate her friction stories to her main life. Butler express how awkward she was by saying "I was miserable and worried that i was never going to do any better, i was the odd person, always writing or reading. People thought i was strange. They'd ask me, If you're not in school, why are you reading a book?. it was rough. Of course, at the time, i didn't know if i was going to succeed. I kept giving up writing like people give up cigarettes. A few days would go by and I'd be writing again. Writing was all that mattered. I kept going because i had to." Her words were very powerful and she didn't let what people say about her define her. The what i admire about her, she has such an influence on others lives as well.

Quotes

edit
  • " I believe that i was ugly and stupid" (Butler, 97)
  • "I kept going because i had too" (Butler, 98)
  • "Butler young adulthood was an amalgam of misery and motivation" (Butler, 98)

"Crossover

edit

Summary

edit

Crossover was mainly about a girl with great work abilities that everyone's jealous of but mostly wish they could be as good. She has definitely been through a lot and because of all of this she has turned to drugs and alcohol abuse. She definitely deserve so much move but i don't think she realize her true value yet after staying with someone who doesn't deserve her.

"Amnesty."

edit

Summary

edit

In the story of Amnesty Noah was kidnapped but aliens in which they used her to experiment on. This happen when she was a child. She was later released then the United States government held her into captivity of years. Torturing and mistreating her for information about the aliens. She then began working for the alien. Her job was to recruit humans to serve in their experiments which was harmless that said. Her job was to calm the humans . But she had her own personal goal. Which was to get her message across . I believe that her message in this story is to basically stand up for your rights. People were afraid of doing that out of fear or being killed. Which in now a day society, people are afraid to speak up because of how society would judge them or look down on their opinions, especially with the society we live in today, where people are very judgmental.

Quotes

edit
  • " You don't have to like it, you don't have to forgive, but if you want to survive you have to deal with it."
  • "She made a beckoning motion with their right hand to let the community know that she was paying attention."
  • "I don't even hate them, and still it feels wrong."

"The Book of Martha."

edit

Summary

edit

The book of Martha is a story about a strong black woman God used help to save humanity's existence. Martha was a writer, she lived alone, where she spends most of her time writing. During her writings she took a break, making her way to get a snack. She find's herself with God. He used her with great work and influenced her to be the bridge that saves humanity, and use the stories of Noah and Jonah to guide her. But there was a catch unfortunately, which was to be low in society. Martha responded that she was born at the bottom of society. I believe that Butler is implying on the choices people make in life. A struggle to improve our lives or make the wrong choices or choosing the easy way out which is always the easy way. It takes believing in ourselves is what makes great success. Its going to happen one day, it just takes believing and preparing for it. Butler has been through a lot in her life and have faced many disappointments. this story is apart of what she herself has faced, being a strong black woman that can change things.

Butler's Biography

edit

Summary

edit

Butler like many people went through a lot in her life, her dad passed away at an early stage so was raised by her mother and maternal grandma. She was also bullied in school and she also grew up in a time of racism. She was also a very shy person. I believe that her past is the reason for her stories with a great messages behind them. i admire the fact that she went beyond what her mother wanted her to be just because its "safe" and followed her dreams, and did what she felt like what right for her. As a young adult now i love my mother to death but if i followed everything she told me to do i wouldn't be a person with my own mind, making decisions for myself. And i'm quite happy i never did, especially growing up in a different time and new generation from my mother we both have different views and totally different mindsets. When a person has been trough a lot in their lives, there's only one way to deal with it, left it affect you and determine your value or you can accept the cycles of life and what it has to offer and become a better person than you were in the past and show the people who has so much opinions about you see how wrong they are. And that's why i respect butler so much for turning all her negative downfalls into positive and became very successful for it, we need more inspiring people like her, women especially, to look up too and learn from, being that there's so much hopeless young women in the world that think they was worthless and have no value because of that people tell them.

Summary

in this story, Rye wanted to find her only relatives she had left. on her way journey, a fight broke up on the bus she was traveling on . She then decided to to walk which was extremely dangerous. One her way she met a man but the name of Obsidian who offered her a ride. On their way, they came across a man chasing a woman and decided to help her but by then it was a little to late. Shorty after the man shot Obsidian in the head while trying the woman. Shortly after he was killed by Rye who was trying to help Obsidian. She then rushed obsidian body back to the car, noticing the woman who was being chased by the man had 2 small children along with her. Rye decided to adopt the children, It was then she opened up to talk to them. I believe that Butler goal was to protry a very dominate view of women and how strong a female can be. She give Rye a very powerful role as a woman and how much can be achieved just as a man can.

Quotes

edit
  • "Rye glanced at the dead murderer. to her shame, she thought she could understand some of the passions that much have driven him. whomever he was."
  • "She had found and lost the man so quickly. It was as though she had been snatched from comfort and security and given a sudden."
  • "A new virus, a new pollutant, radiation, retribution.. the illness was stroke swift in the way in the cut people down and stroke like in some of its effects"

Summary

This story talk's about a girl by the name of Lynn with Duryed Gode Disease. It didn't effect her until she became an adult. This disease caused her to harm people around her and herself as well. her parents also suffered from this disease them selves. With having such disease that she had no complete control over. there were many like her as well. Which showed her that she wasn't alone in her situation. She pretrayed them as being hopeless in a way. The story allows readers to see what its like in the life of people who has diseases and how they deal with it and knowing that their times is almost up without and control over it. Society often look down on a certain kind of people without knowledge of how a person with such a disease might be struggling with their own problems let alone other people opinions of them.

  • "Terror and a kindof driving hopelessness, some of us went bad and become destructive before we had too".

Bloodchild

edit

Summary

edit

Blood child was a very weird and disturbed story to read but also shared a message in between. Butler shows readers an alien planet of which Terran's (the humans) got away from their home because of disasters. The Tlic's which were the insects, could not carry their own children so they used the male Terran's instead and developed similar bonds. The story was told from the first person point of view but a young man named Gan. Gan's mother scarified her son for the alien embryos in order to carry children of her own. Female Tlic's by the name of T'Gatai has a great friendship with Gan's mother and everyone else in their home loved her. T'Gatoi had intentions to lay her egg inside of Gan, who also loved her as well and was quite comfortable with her. Gan's only intentions were to secure his family so he agreed to let T'Gatoi lay her eggs in him. This story basically exchanged the male and female in which females get impregnated but it was the male who got impregnated instead. Gan and others Terran's lived in a area that protected them from the Tlic, they were once at war with. I think Gan lost it when he witnessed the birth of the alien, which for me was very disturbing to to read. It was very bloody and messy operation to the point Gan begin to throw up after what he saw. I guess butler's message in this story, she switched both male and female roles to show the struggle between the two that mutually depend on each other.
