Government and politics edit
The federal government is composed of three branches:
- Legislative: The bicameral Congress, made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives, makes federal law, declares war, approves treaties, has the power of the purse, and has the power of impeachment, by which it can remove sitting members of the government.
- Executive: The President is the commander-in-chief of the military, can veto legislative bills before they become law (subject to Congressional override), and appoints the members of the Cabinet (subject to Senate approval) and other officers, who administer and enforce federal laws and policies.
- Judicial: The Supreme Court and lower federal courts, whose judges are appointed by the President with Senate approval, interpret laws and overturn those they find unconstitutional.
Political parties edit
The United States had operated under a one-party system for most of its history, the Democratic Party. On July 3, 2015, Sal514 and CommandoPatriot created the Republican Party, the first official party to combat the one-party system. Since then other parties have been formed which now hold public offices including: Progressive Conservative Party, ConservAmerica Party, and Democratic Progressive Party. Still the Democratic Party has been the most dominant in elections; holding the office of the President for 11 out of the 12 terms.
For elective offices, party committee initiated discussions choose the major party nominees for subsequent general elections.
The winner of the April 2016 presidential election, Democrat JamesMReed, is the 9th, and current, U.S. president. Current leadership in the Senate includes Independent Vice President JohnWinters, and Independent President Pro Tempore DrGatsby. Leadership in the House includes Progressive Conservative Speaker of the House CharlesMiddleton and ConservAmerican Speaker Pro Tempore Sal514.
In the 7th United States Congress, the House of Representatives are controlled by the Democratic Party and the Senate by the Democratic Progressive Party.
