The Battle of Cachoeira was fought from 25 to 28 June 1822, it was the first engagement of the Brazilian War of Independence.

On 21 June, a secret meeting took place between land owners, farmers and soldiers to discuss the proclamation of Prince Regent D. Pedro as "Perpetual Defender"

On 2 February, at 2:00 p.m., after the mass in the Our Lady of the Rosary Church, the Chamber meeting acclaimed D. Pedro "Perpetual Defender and Protector of the Kingdom of Brazil." Messages were immediately sent to Salvador, and to the villages of the Province, communicating the decision.
