Curps is an administrator who runs an bot that blocks people under two circumstances:
- "Inappropriate" usernames
- Fast page moving
The second is what I will deal with here.
I often make page moves of a large number of articles, typically articles about numbered highways. Sometimes these moves are disputed, and sometimes they have consensus, but they are always made in good faith for what I believe to be an improvement of the encyclopedia. They are never vandalism, which is what this aspect of Curpsbot is intended for (see Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Willy on Wheels). The latest set of moves is discussed on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Illinois State Routes; I got through about 20 before being blocked. (I typically do about 20 moves, then go back and fix double redirects, and repeat.)
I make these moves quickly using browser tabs. This is how I have always done these moves, and it is the easiest way for me to do them. Since Curps started up his blockbot, it has caught me in eight separate false positives. As far as I can tell, Curps believes me when I say that I am not using a bot to make these moves; they are done with built-in features of my browser (K-meleon, basically a lite version of Firefox).
The last several times I have been blocked, it has taken about 10 minutes until another admin has unblocked, and sometimes longer to clear the IP autoblock. Admins have expressed both disbelief when I tell them that I am not using an automated bot to make the moves, and annoyance at having to unblock.
I have asked Curps to turn off the bot with no response.
An additional problem is than administrators are whitelisted by the bot; this introduces a divide between admins and non-admins. Admins are able to make page moves as quickly as possible, but non-admins must guess at how much time to wait per move.
It is not my intention to drive off Curps. I would only like a peaceful resolution to this, in which my manual page moves are not picked up as vandalism. Turning off the bot is one clear solution, but there may be others. I am not asking to be put on the whitelist - I object to the existence of a whitelist at all. --SPUI (T - C - RFC) 03:14, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
